Amazon has been in denial about a possible Kindle smartphone, but new reports indicate that the online retailer is working with HTC to develop a range of Kindle smartphones to pitch them against handsets developed by vendors including Google, Apple and Samsung.
According to a report on the Financial Times, Amazon and HTC are well on their way to develop handsets that will mark retail giant’s entry into the smartphone market while HTC will get a chance to reduce its mounting losses. According to the report, three smartphones are already in the advanced stage of development.
The latest report from FT is more or less in line with previous reports which indicated that Amazon was developing a couple of smartphones – one high-end 3D smartphone with eye tracking technology while the other a cheap version to compete with low-cost Android handsets.
Amazon has been refusing these reports; however, it is speculated that these gadgetry is part of the retail giant’s greater push towards hardware expansion alongside software and services. Internally these hardware projects are known as “Alphabet Projects” and each of the device is given a codename – Project A, B, C, D and so on reports ZDNet. Amazon will want to cash-in on the holiday sale season and if it does launch a smartphone or two it would be during this time of the year.
Other sources indicate that the release timeline is constantly evolving and chances are that Amazon may not enter the smartphone market at all this year.
