Amazon is up with plans of launching an Android gaming console sometime this year that too priced below $300.
The new console, which will reportedly offer streaming and downloading of games, music, movies and TV content, will directly compete with current gaming leaders including Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo.
Amazon is currently busy showing its device to publishers claims VG247. The unit shown to publishers is small in design, grey in color, oblong in shape and is roughly of the same size as the PSone with sharp edges. However, there are chances that the pre-production unit will undergo a full makeover before any official release. Several codenames are being used for the upcoming device.
The retail giant is creating the hardware for the android gaming console in conjunction with subsidiary Lab 126, designers of Amazon’s Kindle devices.
The new gaming device, especially designed for the living room, will connect directly to a TV. Games for the console would likely be drawn from Amazon’s ‘Apps for Android’ library, which currently has 50,000 Android game apps, with price ranging from free to $15.
The gaming system, which will reportedly be powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon processor, will be a direct threat to the Ouya, Gamestick and other microconsoles.
