Google on Wednesday released a new standalone camera app dubbed Google Camera for users with Android 4.4 KitKat devices.
Google’s new Android camera app will come with features that have been available only on Nexus phones and tablets. Photo Sphere and Lens Blur are two of the new app’s biggest features.
“Today we’re launching Google Camera, a new app for your Android phone or tablet that makes it easy to take quick photos and videos. And being behind the lens just got more fun with new creative picture modes,” the search giant announced on Google+.
The Photo Sphere camera mode will let users shoot extra-large interactive panoramas that look similar to Google Street View images. It enables users to take “immersive 360 degree photos” that let them “look up, down, and all around” at up to 50MP.
Another notable feature is the new Lens Blur mode which offers a shallow depth of field to achieve “SLR-like photos”.
“Lens Blur replaces the need for a large optical system with computer vision algorithms and optimization techniques that are run entirely on the mobile device, simulating a larger lens and aperture in order to creating a 3D model of the world,” Google said.
The new camera app also features an “updated UI that gets out of your way” and a large capture button that would make it pretty easy for users to snap photos. The app also includes a 100 percent viewfinder that allows users to look for the maximum resolution from their photos.
Google Camera is available for download through Google Playstore.
