Latest study claims that around 2.1 million Chromebooks shipped in 2013 with nearly 89 percent of total shipments reaching North America.
ABI Research, a market intelligence firm, on Tuesday published its research data, with estimates of more than 11 million Chromebooks to be shipped by 2019. ABI points out that the average sale price of Chromebooks to be the competitive force behind the success of Chromebooks.
“ABI Research tracked Chromebooks across six regions and found the average selling price (ASP) to be US$338,” said research analyst Stephanie Van Vactor in a statement.
“This truly budget-driven device is a disruptive force to the portable PC market.”
The new report also notes that the “ultraportable” notebook segment has managed to grow in 2013. However, the average sale price of ultraportable PCs has declined by a significant 7.4 percent last year, which resulted in even thinner manufacturer margins.
ABI has not revealed the numbers for low-end Windows laptops or Surface or Surface RT devices.
Recently Gartner reported that all Microsoft-operating tablets and low-end based devices sold over 4 million units last year.
The research firm expects the cost and connectivity with greater reliance on cloud platform services to be driving forces for the ultraportable PCs market resulting in increased growth.
“There are many events that can shift the market in 2014, including the EOL of Windows XP, the adoption of Chromebooks, and a stronger focus on web and cloud services,” said senior practice director Jeff Orr.
“How consumers and business audiences respond to these changes will impact the trajectory of the market.”
