Google’s Chromecast has had an impressive UK launch with leading retailer claiming to have sold one Chromecast unit every 4.5 seconds.
The latest reports from some of the European retailers reveal that the sales of Google Chromecast have been quite high since the device launched.
The dongle, which can be plugged straight into TV, allows users to stream content directly from their smartphone or tablet to the big screen.
A Google spokesperson, in a statement to Gigaom, said “We’ve sold millions of Chromecasts to date, and we hope to replicate that success in Europe”. However, Google is yet to officially confirm Chromecast sales figures in the UK.
Dixons Retail, owner of the U.K. electronics store chain Currys, claimed to have sold a Chromecast unit every 4.5 seconds on launch day resulting in the device going temporarily out of stock.
“Google Chromecast continues to be a huge success for us. In the UK, we are the only bricks ‘n’ mortar retailer selling it for now, and on opening day we were selling one every 4.5 seconds!”, a representative from Dixons Retail said.
“Chromecast has been one of the most successful launch days, both online and in-store, in recent years … rivalling the likes of iPad tablets and Google’s own Nexus device”.
Norway’s Elkjøp chain, who also reported strong Chromecast sales, said the company was forced to order an additional batch of 40,000 Chromecast devices just a few days after the launch to keep up with the high demand for the gadget that a spokesperson called “second to none.”
Google Chromecast, which hit UK market shelves on March 19, is now available in the UK, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Spain, Sweden and Norway. The device retails for £35 in the UK and 35 Euros in Europe.
