Apple has cracked down on personal hotspot abuse for unsupported networking through its latest iOS 7.1 update by disabling the ability to manually edit tethering settings for unauthorised carriers.
Users have taken to Apple forums complaining about their inability to save personal hotspot settings post iOS 7.1 update. Users, who have updated their devices to iOS 7.1, claim that the tethering ability was deactivated and were not able to save the APN settings.
Frustrated users from US, UK, India, Italy, Sweden, Netherlands, Mexico, and Spain have reported the same behaviour. Users of iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, iPhone 5, iPhone 5C and iPhone 5S have all reported the same issue.
Going through the entire set of replies, it seems that the issue has been narrowed down to one thing – lack of carrier authorisation. This comes down to supported and unsupported – meaning those who have arrangements with Apple and / or don’t mind people tethering to access internet on other devices through personal hotspot option and those that don’t support the feature.
Users who resorted to buying a SIM from carriers that don’t block personal hotspot have revealed that they are able to save the settings and the personal hotspot works just fine.
