Lacie on Tuesday announced the availability of the Lacie Little Big Disk, featuring Thunderbolt 2 and two PCIe Gen.2 solid state drives (SSDs), claiming it to be the “world’s fastest” portable external storage drive.
To achieve the full potential of Thunderbolt 2 speeds, the Lacie Little Big Disk has been engineered with a pair of 500 GB PCIe Gen 2 solid state disk (SSD) drives configured in a RAID 0 with 4K video editing in mind.
The external drive has a standard configuration delivery speed of up to 1,375 MB/s, which nearly doubles to 2,600MB/s in a parallel configuration with the two Thunderbolt connections to the latest Apple Mac Pro.
The drive is highly portable as it easily fits in a laptop bag and is compatible with systems running Mac OS X 10.8.5 (Mountain Lion) and later.
Little Big Disk is also capable of daisy chaining up to six Thunderbolt 2 and Thunderbolt technology-compatible devices together enabling seamless realtime editing and scalability of big video shoots.
“With these advances, professionals finally have a truly portable solution for editing 4K video in the field,” the company said in a statement.
Lacie emphasised that as its Little Big Disk can transfer dailies ten times faster than any mobile USB 3.0 hard drive. This means with the Little Big Disk it will be possible to transfer 300GB of 4K ultra-high definition video footage in less than three minutes.
The drive, which measures 1.6-in x 5.5-in x 3.3-in weighs 1.4 lbs., is available in 1TB SSD capacity through the LaCie Online Store and LaCie Resellers at a suggested retail price of $1,299. The drive will come with a three-year limited warranty.
