UK entertainment retailer, HMV has begun to phase out its pre-owned video game sales. The retailer is no longer purchasing second-hand games, and its remaining stock is being discounted by 70 percent for clearance including the next-gen titles, reports Eurogamer.
HMV is selling pre-owned games at a ludicrous markdown with Price tags of all pre-owned games marked with reduced rates of under £15 including the PS4 and Xbox One titles.
Twitter user @L1keMike tweeted “Get to HMV folks ASAP! 70% OFF all pre-owned games. Xbox One/PS4 included,” along with a snapshot that revealed a number of Xbox One games including Call of Duty Ghosts and FIFA 14 priced at £13.50 and £12 respectively.
HMV’s decision of the firesale comes as it re-assesses its focus, moving away from video games into music and movies as a core part of its business with their recent digital strategy.
Last week, Frugal Gaming reported that HMV was planning for a massive clear out on its current pre-owned games stock and also suggested that the company would cease selling pre-owned games, pulling out of used-games market.
HMV’s Re/Play pre-owned offering began back in October 2008 at 160 stores. Tim Ellis, the retailer’s head of games at that time considered it to be a great deal for the customers as well as the industry and a strategy to drive sales of other entertainment products available from HMV.
