Roku has announced a new version of its Streaming Stick that is a lot more accessible and affordable at just $49.
“This new tiny player plugs discreetly into an HDMI port – perfect for those beautiful wall-mounted TVs – and packs the complete Roku streaming experience”, announced Jim Funk, SVP, Product Management at Roku Inc.
“That means access to 1,200+ channels of movies, TV episodes, music, news, sports, kids’ shows and free programming streamed in up to 1080p HD video, plus a TV user interface featuring the beloved Roku Search.”
The gadget works with any TV – even non-Roku ready TVs without MHL-enhanced HDMI port – but can’t be controlled through TV’s remote and comes with own RF- and WiFi-connected remote allowing users to search and navigate through its menu items.
Further the new Streaming Stick won’t be able to draw power from the TV unlike its predecessor and so users will be required to plug it into the TV via USB or into a regular power outlet.
Despite these things, the Streaming Stick is highly affordable at $49 and allows anyone to transform their TVs into connected TVs and stream content through various streaming services. The initial version of the Streaming Stick carried a price tag of $99.
Last year in spring, Roku introduced its high-end Roku 3 and the new Streaming Stick is company’s first new launch since then.
