Facepunch founder Garry Newman revealed in his tweet that Garry’s Mod has surpassed $30 million sales, around eight years after its initial release.
Garry’s Mod, a sandbox physics game, originally released as a mod to Valve’s first-person shooter Half-Life 2 in December 2004 and was later launched as a stand-alone game on Steam in November 2006 for $9.99.
The game allows players to manipulate objects and experiment with the physics of the Source engine, often for interesting results including different game-modes, objectives and styles. After 10 years from the launch, Garry’s Mod has now hit the milestone of $30 million sales.
“Garry’s Mod has just broke $30,000,000,” tweeted Garry Newman. “And if my calculations are correct — we have now officially made more money from Rust than Garry’s Mod. 0.34% more!”
Newman explained this “0.34% more” as “See news sites speculating about How much Rust has made.. To clear it up, we get less royalties from GMod than Rust.” He also added that Facepunch receives “in Rust we get 70%,” and “in GMod we get 50% or $2.50 if it’s part of a package.”
According to the tweet, Facepunch Studios’ new game Rust has pipped Garry’s Mod sales by 0.34 percent, in just 3 months from its launch.
Earlier this month, Garry Newman tweeted that Rust hit 1 million units sold milestone in 2 months along with a link to a screenshot revealing lifetime total units of 1,001,570.
Facepunch released an alpha version of Rust, an open-world sandbox survival game, on Steam in December last year for $19.99. The game within 5 weeks of sales generated 40 percent of what Garry’s Mod made in last 9 years.
