Recent reports suggests that Apple is all set to wind up production of its most popular tablet, iPad 2, this year.
According to Apple Insider Apple is going to retire its ageing iPad 2 this year in favour of its third and fourth-generation successors.
The iPad 2, released three years ago in March 2011, was an immediate success. The device proved so popular that even after the launch of iPad with Retina Display also known as iPad 3 a year later, the company decided to continue to offer the previous-generation iPad 2 as a more budget-friendly alternative at a lower price point of $399.
A study published late last year before the debut of the iPad Air and Retina iPad mini suggested the iPad 2 remained the company’s most popular tablet in use, accounting for some 38 percent of units.
The reports citing unnamed sources revealed that the company has decided to stop production of the iPad 2 considering the fact that most of its consumers are opting for more recent models of the iPad launched in November last year, whether it’s the 7.9-inch iPad Mini with Retina or the 9.7-inch iPad Air.
Analyst Ming-Chi Kuo of KGI Securities claimed that opinion that Apple shipped just 0.3 million iPad 2 units in the last quarter of 2013 adding to the speculations that Apple will finally wind up production of iPad 2.
The iPad maker is yet to confirm the story.
