Head of Marketing at Microsoft Tami Reller has revealed the sales figures for Windows 8 stating that the latest operating system has sold 200 million licenses since its launch 15 months ago.
The numbers were announced by Reller at the Goldman Sachs technology conference on Thursday – Microsoft’s first public announcement regarding Windows 8 in more than 6 months.
Windows 7 sold 240 million licenses in first year itself and latest Windows 8 stats resonate indicate and adds a sort of credence to reports that Windows 8 hasn’t been all that successful and Microsoft may be dragging dead meat on this shoulders.
Microsoft created Windows 8 as a hybrid operating system that works not only on personal computers, but also on tablets and handheld systems; however, the plan didn’t actually hit the right chords as Redmond alienated some of the most liked features of Windows including the Start button.
Glancing at last month’s statistics Windows 8 and 8.1 command a combined share of just over 10 percent share as compared to Windows 7, which commands nearly 50 percent of market share. Windows XP, which is nearing its end of life, is still at 29 percent.
Windows 8’s 200 million licenses sold is only 44 percent of Windows 7, which has sold 450 million licenses till date.
