With an aim in mind to build a website that would change the way people interact with each other across the world, a curly-haired 19-year-old boy, Mark Zuckerberg, launched “The facebook” from his dorm room at Harvard University on Feb. 4, 2004.
The website soon spread like wildfire across American campuses when students’ parents, grandparents, and friends eager to keep in touch with them, eventually started joining the social networking phenomenon.
According to the company’s recent figures over 1.2 billion people have accounts on the social network, which accounts to one-seventh of the world’s population.
In its Social Media Update 2013, the Pew Research Centre’s Internet Project revealed the networking giant’s biggest audience growth is coming from people aged over 65. As per figures, 45 percent of 65-plus people are now using the website, up from 35 percent a year ago.
With 84 percent of people between 18 and 29 using Facebook indicates that the social network is still everybody’s favourite despite reports of dropping active user count in 2013. Researchers from University College London, based on their research, published a report in December last year claiming that London teens between 16 and 18 are leaving Facebook.
Facebook is facing tough competition from other social networks and apps including Snapchat, Twitter, Instagram, WhatsApp and this week’s newcomer SocialRadar to become teens’ social network of choice.
This week Facebook announced a new app, Paper, an app that provides a new way to share photos and published articles. The company hasn’t yet revealed as how it plans to celebrate its 10th anniversary.
