Google may be planning to ditch its Nexus branding by 2015 and instead adopt the Play Edition naming convention – even the existing Nexus devices will be renamed.
These bold claims come from none other than Russian blogger Eldar Murtazin who is known for leaking information before they are made public and his track record is convincing if not stellar. Murtazin tweeted “Nexus line by Google is over in 2015 😉 Yes – this line will be replaced by Play Edition (current name, it will be rebranded)”.
Beyond the Nexus tweet, Murtazin also claimed that Samsung and Google’s patent licensing deal is more than what it seems from the periphery. The deal is much more beyond patents and both the companies will collaborate more on future devices with Samsung in charge of complete hardware development for Google including the next Play Edition devices.
Further, it has also been claimed that Samsung will stop working on Tizen devices and will instead focus on Android gadgetry. This is not the first time that the blogger has claimed demise of Tizen as back in July last year he went on to claim that Tizen was dead and buried. However, that didn’t prove correct as Samsung announced a $4 million developer contest for Tizen apps just two months after Murtazin’s claims.
There has been no indication from Google that this is something it is looking at and the tweet from the blogger is definitely surprising considering how famous the Nexus brand has been for the search engine giant specifically Nexus 4 and Nexus 5. Play Edition smartphones from HTC and Samsung are already available from Google Play and they have found a great deal of takers as well, so there seems to be no reason why Google will go ahead with such a rebranding.
