Galaxy S5 to have this, S5 will have that! This is the trumpet that various unconfirmed sources are blowing. Biometric authentication is a cup cake and every smartphone vendor wants to eat it. Samsung is the latest to join the bandwagon, only in rumours so far, and from the looks of it the Korean electronics giant is not able to make up its mind whether to fit Galaxy S5 with iris recognition or fingerprint recognition system.
Just yesterday there were reports that ‘some aware about the Galaxy S5 specifications’ claimed that Samsung’s next flagship will have a state-of-the-art iris recognition system, a 20-megapixel camera and a plastic body. Even Samsung’s executives confirmed that they were looking at the possibility of fitting an iris scanner into their smartphones. But he did note that nothing was set in stone.
There are issues with having an iris scanner for biometric authentication. First of all this form of biometric authentication would require a special camera that will not only require a change in the design of the smartphone, but it will also make it bulky.
Further what if a user wants to use the smartphone when it’s dark? Will they be comfortable with an LED light shining bright every time they want to unlock their phone? Its written ‘uncomfortable’ everywhere!
Latest report from the Korean Herald debunks the possibility of an iris scanner for the same reasons mentioned above. Citing unnamed sources, the Korean publication claims that Samsung is not going to fit in an iris scanner, but will rather stick to easier fingerprint scanner. The report claims that the scanner will be placed below the Galaxy S5’s display.
Biometric firms IriTech Inc. and Sambon Precision and Electronics Co. rumoured to have supplied iris recognition gear to Samsung have also declined that they are working with the Galaxy S4 maker reports the Korean Herald.
Quickly recapping the rumoured specification of the Galaxy S5 – the smartphone is expected to have 2K display with a resolution of 1,440 x 2,560 pixels (QHD), 2900mAh battery, a 64-bit processor, Android 4.4.2 KitKat, plastic body, 20-megapixel rear camera with improved optical image stabilisation among other things.
According to earlier reports, Galaxy S5 will be launched at an event in London in March.
