Samsung has announced that it will be revealing its Smart Home at CES 2014 that will compete with LG’s HomeChat service allowing users to control their smart appliances including TVs through a smartphone.
Samsung Smart Home will first be providing three basic functions: device control; home view; and smart customer service.
Through the device control function, users will be able to control smart appliances including home air conditioning, TV, lights and others through either tapping on a smartphone app or giving a voice command to their Galaxy Gear smartwatch or smart TV remote. Users can give commands such as “going out” to their Galaxy Gear smartwatch to shut off lights and other appliances in their home. Say “goodnight” to your Smart TV remote and the TV will turn off while the lights go dim.
Under Home View, the smart appliances are to be equipped with cameras that will allow users to have a view of their home when they are far away. The smart customer service option will tell users when which particular component of their appliance needs servicing or replacement.
To be rolled out first for Samsung range of products, the Smart Home will be extended to other non-Samsung appliances through Home software protocol (SHP). To ensure that there is connectivity between Samsung gadgets and third party appliances, Samsung has already formed a Smart Home Steering Committee to align various Samsung units around the smart home idea.
