Teardown of Apple’s latest Mac Pro has revealed that the processor is replaceable – meaning that anyone can pull out the processor and fit a new one in as and when they need more processor horsepower.
It wasn’t news that RAM was upgradable, but the existing Intel Xeon E5 CPU can be replaced with a better one as and when Intel releases one. Currently the Mac Pro comes in two options – a quad-core or a six-core processor. The theoretical replacement is possible – thanks to the LGA 2011 socket that is used in all 2013 Mac Pro.
The base model is priced at $2,999 and packs a quad-core 3.7GHz Intel Xeon processor with support for Turbo Boost to clock up to 3.9GHz, 12GB RAM, 256GB SSD, and AMD D300 FirePro graphics.
Users will be able to upgrade their Mac Pros in future by simply buying a processor, removing the old one and plugging in the new one. However we would like to remind our readers that taking apart the Mac Pro will void the system’s warranty.
