Microsoft’s dream of seeing Windows 10 run on 1 billion devices by 2018 may still be far off in the dark, but it is inching towards the goal with latest reports suggesting that the latest OS is already running on 75 million devices.
Microsoft reached this milestone in four weeks after launch. Though the number may seem huge, if we compare it with the first 24 hours after launch installation base of 14 million, it doesn’t seem too large a figure.
In comparison, Windows 8 was installed on around 40 million devices within the first month, while Windows 7 hit 90 million sales after eight months of launch.
It was Yusuf Mehdi, corporate vice president of Microsoft’s Windows and Devices Group, who took to micro blogging website Twitter to announce the milestone on Wednesday. “More than 75 million devices now run the software, with the number “growing every day,” Mehdi tweeted.
Mehdi also shared on Twitter that more than 90,000 unique PCs or tablet models have been upgraded to Windows 10 in 192 countries worldwide and that more than 122 years of gameplay have streamed from Xbox One to Windows 10 devices.
He also revealed that the Windows Store for Windows 10 has seen six times more downloads per device than Windows 8 and Microsoft’s digital assistant Cortana has told half a million jokes since launch.
Redmond began rolling out Windows 10 to Windows 7, 8 and 8.1 users as a free upgrade for consumers and some business customers on July 29. The tech giant continues to roll out the free Windows 10 upgrade in waves.
