Microsoft’s Xbox One outsold Sony’s PlayStation 4 in the United States last month, revealed NPD’s April results.
Microsoft reported a 63 per cent increase in Xbox One sales and a 24 per cent increase in number of Xbox Live active users compared to a year ago.
“We are grateful to our fans for their passion and support and are looking forward to sharing more on the best game lineup in Xbox history at E3,” Mike Nichols, Corporate Vice President of Xbox Marketing, said in a statement.
Sony, meanwhile, touted its own success during the month, leading software sales for the month. The company noted that it still leads in cumulative consoles sold in the United States.
“We would like to thank fans around the world for their continued support of the PS4,” Sony said in a statement.
“According to NPD, PlayStation continues to lead software sales for April 2015 and PS4 remains the cumulative sales leader in the US. We are looking forward to an amazing E3.”
According to industry-tracking firm NPD, the US games market was up three per cent year-on-year, rising from $595.7m to $579.5m in April.
Revenue from hardware sales was down four per cent from $191.9 million to $183.9 million, with the overall increase in the market coming from software sales which were up 13 per cent year-on-year. In terms of unit sales; hardware was up 12 per cent.
NPD attributed decline in hardware sales to a 55 per cent dip in sales of the older formats, such as PlayStation 3, Xbox 360 and Wii.
“April 2015 hardware sales decreased by 4 percent due to the 55 percent decline in sales of [Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, and Wii] hardware,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan said in a statement.
“[Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U] hardware sales were stable, and portable hardware increased by 36 percent.”
