US mobile carrier FreedomPop is all set to make a UK debut in July this year.
FreedomPop’s very first SIM-only plan will offer 200MB of data, 200 texts and 200 minutes of voice calls per month for free. The carrier already offers a similar free mobile data plan in the US, to around a million users.
Those on the service will also get free unlimited calls to other FreedomPop members and free international calling to over 60 countries.
The free mobile network is backed by Skype founder Niklas Zennstom and plans to make all of its money from offering additional services, reports the BBC.
One such service is the ability to operate two internationally different numbers from a UK SIM-card. This means that a UK subscriber will be able to operate a US-based number from the Sim card in addition to their normal UK number for a £2 per month charge. Another service includes secure anonymous browsing as well as the ability to roll over unused data to the next month.
FreedomPop is also launching Jetsetter, a free international roaming data SIM that offers free data around the world. It provides 100MB of data a month for free to be used while roaming and has bolt-ons to expand that.
Initially, it will be available only in the UK, Spain and France, but coverage will eventually expand to over 20 countries.
“We’re all really excited to announce our first steps into Europe this summer with the launch of the UK’s first free mobile phone service,” FreedomPop said in a blog post.
“We’ve seen tremendous success with offering free talk, text and data in the US, and we’re looking forward to making this available to everyone, wherever they are.”
