Microsoft: Lumia 640, Lumia 640 XL will be first to make the jump to Windows 10

Microsoft has confirmed that the recently released Lumia 640 and its larger sibling – the Lumia 640 XL, will be among the first devices in the lot to receive the Windows 10 for Phones update.

The confirmation was made via a video announcement which featured General Manager of Microsoft’s Scandinavian division Ossi Korpela, saying that Lumia 640 will apparently be the first smartphones to make the jump to Windows 10.

“It’s a high end device that is affordable for the consumers and businesses… It will be the first device that will run later on, this year, Windows 10. This device will include the Office 365,” Korpela said in the promotional video.

Korpela has also hinted that Windows 10 for Phones will first be released in Europe and then to other Windows Phone users across the world. The OS will be made available via over-the-air (OTA) mechanism.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 and 640 XL were officially introduced in March during MWC 2015 in Barcelona.

To recap, the Microsoft Lumia 640 is powered by a quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 1.2GHz processor and features a 5-inch display with a HD resolution of 1280 x 720 pixels, 1GB of RAM, an 8GB internal memory with microSD support for additional memory of up to 128GB, a 2,500mAh battery and 30GB of free OneDrive cloud storage space. There’s also a 0.9 megapixel front facing camera and an 8-megapixel rear camera on board.

The Microsoft Lumia 640 XL features a 5.7-inch display sporting a resolution of 1,280 by 720 pixels, a Qualcomm Snapdragon 400 processor, 1GB of RAM, 8GB of internal storage coupled with a microSD card support of up to 128GB coupled with 30GB of free OneDrive storage. The handset packs a 13MP camera for photos and videos, a 5MP front-facing camera, a massive 3,000 mAh battery and ships with Windows Phone 8.1 with Lumia Denim out of the box.

Redmond is expected to roll out the Windows 10 operating system later this summer. The launch of the Windows 10 for phones will follow the operating software’s desktop launch.
