Millions of Facebook users on Thursday evening took to Twitter to complain of mysteriously disappearing posts.
Users complained that they had their posts deleted after the social networking site suffered from a bug which blocked people from sharing links and noted that those who attempted to post with links were prompted with obscure security warning which read “This message contains content that had been blocked by our security systems. If you think you’re seeing this by mistake, please let us know.”
The issue appeared on Facebook’s image-scraping tool which automatically posts pictures from shared links.
A Facebook spokesperson said the bug had been fixed by Friday morning.
“An error in our system that helps block bad links on Facebook incorrectly marked some URLs as malicious or inappropriate. As a result, some existing posts were hidden, while other posts were blocked completely.”
“We’ve resolved the issue and the remaining affected URLs are being unblocked. We apologise for the inconvenience this has caused,” the spokesperson said in a statement.
