Twitter has undertaken the job of reminding Brits to register to vote in the General Election, ahead of the April 20 deadline.
The social blogging giant on Monday sent out a tweet reminding users that the deadline to sign up and vote in the upcoming General Election is just seven days away. The tweet also provides a link with the hashtag #RegisterToVote.
The Electoral Commission also sent a tweet that provided a link to the GOV.UK website, which provides additional information on online registration.
In a blog post Joanna Geary, Twitter’s head of news and government partnerships, said “The #GE2015 has played out on Twitter in important ways in just the past few weeks, and it isn’t just politicians and pundits who are joining the real-time conversation.
“Voters sent over 1.5 million Tweets during the #LeadersDebate, and in March, the #BattleforNumber10 became a worldwide trending topic on Twitter.”
Alex Robertson, the Electoral Commission’s director of communications, said “More and more people have been getting themselves registered, but it’s now time for one last push.”
The watchdog also noted that more than one million people have submitted an online application to register to vote since it launched its main campaign in mid-March.
Twitter also recently introduced a feature called ‘hashflags’ to make Election chatter more colorful, giving each of the major parties its own dedicated icon.
