Samsung has slammed SquareTrade’s bend test results published last week which questions on the durability of its new flagship Galaxy S6 handset.
The bend test video showed that the Galaxy S6 Edge is susceptible to bending and shattering under 110 pounds of pressure.
Clarifying its stand on the issue, Samsung in an official post said that all of its devices go through “high-quality validation tests” before they are shipped to consumers. The tests include dropping, bending, and breakage of the device.
“We are confident that all our smartphones are not bendable under daily usage,” the company said.
Samsung claimed that the tests conducted by SquareTrade were not fair as 110 pounds of pressure against a smartphone is very unlikely to occur in real consumer usage situations.
“The video assumes a very specific condition – 110lbf (50kgf), which rarely occurs under normal circumstances. The normal force that generated when a person presses the back pocket is approximately 66lbf (30kgf). Our internal test results indicate that the Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 edge are not bendable even under 79lbf (32kgf), which is equivalent to putting pressure to snap a bundle of five pencils at once,” the smartphone maker’s official blog post read.
Furthermore, Samsung also said that the test conducted by SquareTrade does not show the strength of the back side.
“Secondly, even though both front and back sides are exposed under the same level of pressure in normal circumstances, this test does not show the strength of the back side. Some smartphones have different durability in each the front and back sides respectively. SquareTrade has only tested the front side, which may mislead consumers about the entire durability of smartphones.”
In addition to releasing a video showing internal bend tests carried out on the device, Samsung has formally asked SquareTrade to conduct the stress test again this time targeting both the front and back sides of the device and make those results public.
