Earth Hour 2015 will see more than 700 landmarks across the world plunge into darkness starting 20:30 GMT on Saturday 2015 and to show their support major landmarks in the UK are also set to switch off their lights.
Buckingham Palace, London’s Tower Bridge, Old Trafford football stadium and the Elizabeth Tower, widely known as Big Ben, will be taking part in today’s World Wildlife Fund’s Earth Hour, which is a major initiative of the global organization to raise awareness about climate change. Earth Hour was launched in 2007 in Australia and has since spread around the world.
Some of the other major global landmarks which are to take part in the event include Christ the Redeemer in Brazil, France’s Eiffel Tower and more than 30 UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The Palace of Westminster, Blackpool Tower and Edinburgh Castle are among the UK sites to take part.
According to WWF, London’s South Bank will be the “focal point” for the Earth Hour switch off and visitors will be experiencing candlelit dinners in many of its bars and restaurants.
Andy Murray, the British tennis champion, is a WWF global ambassador and he backed the campaign along with Prime Minister David Cameron and Labour leader Ed Miliband.
According to WWF, as many as 9 million people in the UK took part in the Earth Hour and more are expected to take part this year.
