Recent report suggests Google is planning to turn its popular computer game ‘Ingress’ into a television series.
According to a report from The Information, citing two people involved in the discussions, Google has partnered with Sean Daniel Co., the producer behind the Mummy movie franchise and the upcoming Syfy series “The Expanse,” to make a television show based on Ingress, a game created by Google’s Niantic Labs gaming studio.
As per the report, Google hasn’t pitched anything to networks and it hasn’t appointed a showrunner yet, so it seems the plan is in early stage.
The science-fiction game involves gamers traveling to actual locations (landmarks, monuments, etc) called ‘portals’ and “capturing” them for their team by using various commands on their smartphones. The game was released as a closed beta for Android in late 2012, before going public in December 2013. It debuted last year for Apple’s iOS.
The game has become so popular that it even has a YouTube channel that hosts tutorials and news reports from the game’s fictional world.
Google is yet to comment on the report.
