BT has finally announced re-entry into the consumer mobile sector with the launch of its own 4G service dubbed ‘BT Mobile’ which will run on EE’s network.
BT is initially offering three 12-month SIM-only plans starting at £5 per month for existing BT Broadband customers. The cheapest £5 plan offers up to 500MB of 4G data, unlimited texts and 200 minutes of talk time to existing broadband customers. The same plan costs £10 otherwise.
The mid-range £12 per month (£17 for non-broadband customers) plan offers 2GB of data and 500 minutes of talk time. At the top end, the £20 per month (£25 for non-broadband customers) plan offers 20GB of 4G data with unlimited texts and minutes.
All of the subscription plans will come on a 12-month contract and will also offer unlimited access to BT’s nationwide network of 5 million WiFi hotspots as well as free BT Sport access via the mobile app, even for customers who are not BT Broadband subscribers.
John Petter, chief executive of BT Consumer, said “Offering BT customers the UK’s best value 4G data deal is a great way to start our journey towards re-establishing ourselves as a major player in consumer mobile. These great value deals are a thank you from us to loyal BT Broadband homes. We are offering customers a new type of great value mobile deal that offers more than just data, minutes and texts.”
BT, which is currently in the process of buying EE for a proposed £12.5 billion, has announced that it will “reveal more details after the deal completes about what [EE] customers will be offered”.
