PS3 has succeeded in snatching the best-selling US console crown from Microsoft’s Xbox 360, all thanks to GTAV. The Xbox 360 was at the number one best-selling console spot since the last 32 months.
The September month came in with a lot of exciting things happening. The users finally got their hands on the latest addition to the GTA series- Grand Theft Auto 5. The GTAV quickly grossed revenues of $1 billion within just three days of its launch and from the looks of it’s the PS3 GTA 5 bundle would have surely done well as well.
According to NPD’s US retail report, the total industry sales increased 27 percent amounting to $1.079 billion, while the console software sales went up 52 percent totaling $754 million.
Wii U sales in the US also jumped up to a whopping 200% in the same month. Wii U UK sales shot up more than 685% this week after the Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD bundle was released on October 4th.
Liam Callahan, an NPD analyst, said GTA V was a “much needed shot in the arm for the industry” and that the game “represented over 50 percent of dollar sales in September, and had the highest first month sales than any other previous launch in the Grand Theft Auto franchise”.
“PS3 was the top selling console this month, breaking the 32-month streak of the Xbox 360 leading console hardware sales from January 2011 to August 2013,” he added.
Other top PS3 performers included EA Sports’ Madden NFL 25 and FIFA 14, Blizzard’s Diablo III and Take-Two’s NBA 2K14.
