Twitter is rumored to have come up with plans to launch a standalone direct-messaging app to compete with the popular rival messaging apps including WhatsApp and Snapchat.
According to reports, Twitter will be incorporating a new feature in its messaging app which will allow users to send and receive direct messages to people who they are not following, reports AllThingsD.
Reports are that Twitter has already begun testing this feature internally for weeks as it already rolled out this feature to a limited capacity of people sometime earlier this week. Three sources close to the matter have revealed that the microblogging and social media giant will be launching the app separate from Twitter, but it’s not yet sure as what form the app will take.
Twitter’s main focus has never been direct and private messaging rather the social media giant was of the opinion of killing direct messaging service off altogether. But the rising popularity of personal-messaging apps like Line, WhatsApp, Snapchat, and KakaoTalk has forced the company to revaluate and reconstruct its messaging capabilities.
One of the Twitter’s leading social media rival Facebook has already heeded to the importance of instant messaging and is offering standalone app called Messenger for iOS and Android. Twitter is yet to confirm the news officially.
Earlier Twitter started an experimental @eventparrot account to test its rumoured breaking news system.
