Apple on Thursday announced users spent almost half a billion dollars on iOS apps and in-app purchases during the first week of 2015, setting up a new App Store record.
Hold on that’s not it, Cupertino also recorded the largest day ever in Store’s sales history on New Year’s Day this year.
2014 has proved to be a record breaking year for the tech giant’s App Store with billings increasing 50 per cent and apps generating over US$10 billion in revenue for developers. Cupertino also noted that so far app developers have earned over US$25 billion from the sale of iOS apps, since the App Store opened in 2008.
“This year is off to a tremendous start after a record-breaking year for the Apple app store and our developer community,” said Eddy Cue, Apple’s senior vice president of Internet Software and Services.
“We’re so proud of the creativity and innovation developers bring to the apps they create for iOS users and that the developer community has now earned over $25 billion.”
Amid the Christmas season, Apple app store customers also helped make history with their support of Apps for (RED), an initiative on the store where all proceeds made through download or in-app purchases from participating apps went to the Global Fund to fight AIDS. Apple contributed a record-breaking $20 million this quarter, and since cooperating with (RED) has given over $100 million.
Apple also mentioned in the statement that the iOS ecosystem has helped to create 627,000 jobs in the United States.
The Apple App store is currently home to more than 1.4 million apps for iPhone, iPad and iPod touch users available in 24 categories, including games, social networking, photo & video, sports, health & fitness, travel and kids.
