Recent reports suggest Microsoft could unveil its Xbox virtual reality headset device at the Electronic Entertainment Expo (E3) in June next year.
According to DigiTimes, citing “upstream supply chain” sources, Microsoft is expected to launch its long rumored Xbox virtual reality headset during E3 2015, scheduled for June 16-18, 2015, followed by a retail release sometime in the second half of 2015.
As per the report, the Redmond’s headset is well into development and even in the hands of some developers, suggesting that software for the device is already in the works.
The report also claims that the VR headset is being developed by the by the same team that runs Microsoft’s Surface tablet line. Unfortunately, no further details about features or functionality are currently available.
Microsoft had earlier announced its interest in the VR segment saying that virtual reality is something the company has been experimenting with for a long time now.
Redmond’s entry into the VR segment comes way too late as compared to other tech giants. Facebook, with its acquired Oculus VR, is already working on to launch a head-worn product dubbed the Oculus Rift in 2015.
Console competitor Sony has also announced its in-progress Project Morpheus, Samsung recently released the Gear VR accessory which works with its Galaxy phones, even Google introduced Cardboard, a cheaper, more accessible way for people to experience. And now it’s Microsoft’s turn to join the virtual reality party.
Microsoft is yet to comment on the report.
