Amid reports that surfaced last week stating that hackers have compromised login credentials of numerous PlayStation Network, Windows Live and 2K Games users, Microsoft has come forward to clarify its stand on the issue and to announce that the hacking rumors was just a hoax.
Hacker group ‘DerpTrolling’ had last week rumored that it had infiltrated user account credentials across the PlayStation Network, Windows Live and 2K Games platforms, and had posted thousands of login details, including both passwords and usernames of 2,131 PSN users, 1,473 Windows Live users and 2,000 2K Game Studios users, on file sharing website Pastebin.
Refuting hacking claims, Microsoft said “We immediately investigated reports regarding some Microsoft Accounts including Windows Live and Hotmail and can confirm that no Microsoft site or service was compromised.
“Microsoft takes account security and privacy seriously. Should we identify any specific account at risk for any reason, we will take action to protect the account.”
As a preventive measure, Microsoft has urged users to set strong passwords, change passwords regularly and avoid using the same password for multiple accounts. It also directed users to microsoft.com/security for more information on the same.
Sony also denied hacking rumors saying that “We have investigated the claims that our network was breached and have found no evidence that there was any intrusion into our network.
“Unfortunately, internet fraud including phishing and password matching are realities that consumers and online networks face on a regular basis. We take these reports very seriously and will continue to monitor our network closely.”
2K Games is yet to comment on the issue.
