Roku recently announced it has added Google Play Movies & TV to its streaming channel lineup which already includes Netflix, Amazon Instant Video, Hulu Plus, HBO Go, Watch ESPN and a ton of other video and music services.
Google Play Movies and TV, which is also available on iOS and Android devices, will offer Roku users’ an access to a wide collection of movies and TV shows ranging from hottest new releases to iconic classics.
The app will allow users to watch exclusive new releases like 22 Jump Street, Into the Storm and Let’s Be Cops in SD or HD before they are made available on Blu-ray and DVD.
In addition new users signing up for a Google Play account will also be eligible to earn a special ‘Gift from Google’ – which is a free HD copy of the original “X-Men” movie. Finally, the app also features special Info Cards which pops up actors’ names when a show or movie is paused.
The Google Play app is now available in the in the US, UK, Canada, and Ireland on all current Roku devices released from June 2011 including the Roku 3, Roku 2, Roku 1, the Roku Streaming Stick, the Roku 2 HD, XD, and XS; and the Roku HD. Support for Roku TV is also in the pipeline.
Google is also going to gain a lot from this addition considering that there are over 10 million Roku devices that have been sold. With that large a customer base, Google has 10 million potential points of sale for video sales and rentals.
