Google X, the tech giant’s discreet wing that develops innovative projects and products, is reportedly making television screens that would clip together making one giant television screen seamlessly.
Google is said to be trying to differentiate itself by making screens without any bezels which can just be moved around to make different shapes and project videos and images.
The Wall Street Journal has reported on the initiative saying that the displays are “composed of smaller screens that plug together like Legos to create a seamless image.” While digital billboards, video walls and stadium jumbotrons currently use these multiple screen television, it is uncertain as to which businesses Google is targeting.
As Google also has Project Ara, a modular phone project that makes phones with removable parts which can be swapped to upgrade or downgrade the phone without having to change the entire phone. It is said that the Project Ara smartphone will also come without bezels. However, Google has not commented on Project Ara phones being completely free of bezels in any of its announcements before.
The Ara is expected to launch sometime in January next year and the multi-screen TV is not expected anytime before that. It was also said that the company is facing challenges in projecting the same image on all the screens at once and it seems it will require some time to develop a technology to make the large television work seamlessly.
Currently, the display division of Google X that is making the large television, is led by Mary Lou Jepsen, former CEO of Pixel Qi that makes digital displays readable under direct sunlight and cofounder of One Laptop Per Child initiative.
