Recent reports suggest that Microsoft’s next generation OS dubbed Windows 9 or Windows Threshold will be offered absolutely free of cost for existing Windows 8 users.
According to the Indonesian news portal Detik, President of Microsoft Indonesia, Andreas Diantoro has confirmed that the yet-to-be released Windows 9 will be available for free to all existing Windows 8 users post release. As per the report, Windows 8 users will be able to easily install the Windows 9 update after downloading it from Microsoft.
Furthermore, it is expected that the Redmond could also attempt to woo existing Windows XP users to upgrade to the new Windows iteration by offering them special upgrade offers.
Microsoft has already sent out invites for a special September 30 event that could see a technical preview of its next Windows iteration.
“Join us to hear about what’s next for Windows and the enterprise” read the San Francisco event invitation.
Leaked screenshots and videos of Windows 9 codenamed ‘Threshold’ indicate that the new OS will support a slew of new features including a new Start menu, a virtual desktops feature to enhance user’s productivity, and a brand new Notification Center to help users keep track of everything.
It is believed that Windows 9 would come with a more user-friendly desktop user interface with flattened icons, alongside some taskbar changes for future Cortana integration and virtual desktops.
