The next addition to Google X projects is Lift Labs that makes a smart spoon that can sense tremors in people suffering from motor disabilities to make it easier for them to eat without spilling food, as disclosed by Google.
The tech giant on Wednesday revealed in a post that it had taken Lift Labs into its Google X fold. However, both companies remained tight lipped about the financial details of the deal.
While Lift Labs will continue to offer its product which comes with attachments including a spoon, a fork, deep soup spoon, etc, the company will become part of Google X projects and extend its scale of operations for developing next generation technology.
Google said that it hopes to explore the technology further and develop products to understand and help people with neurodegenerative diseases.
The acquisition is yet another move of Google in the biotechnology market and it is already testing waters in this space with its other projects such as the contact lens with sensors to measure blood sugar and other vitals. Google X also has other projects such as driverless cars and Project Loon to offer internet connectivity to remote areas through balloons.
The latest acquisition is said to be more of a personal interest for Google as its co-founder Sergey Brin has a genetic mutation condition which he said that puts him at a higher risk of developing Parkinson’s and his mother has already been diagnosed with Parkinson’s.
Google also has a partnership with Calico and AbbVie to develop treatment methods for health conditions related to aging.
