LG rolled out a software update for the G Watch, one of the first Android Wear smartwatches to hit the market, following multiple complaints concerning the gold terminal pins to have caused minor skin irritation and even burns for early adopters.
In the last weeks, a number of reports surfaced related to the slight discolouration of the charging pins to the corrosion in extreme cases, preventing the device from charging properly. Some wearers have reported skin irritation and even minor chemical burns because of the pins, in a handful of cases.
Android Police reports the problem of skin irritation and minor burning was due to the constant electrical current sent through the exposed POGO pins while the watch was worn. The discolouration and corrosion of the pins complained by users is said to be the reaction of sweat pairing with the POGO pins.
LG, acknowledging the reports from G Watch owners, said that a maintenance release will be rolled out “over the next few days,” which will disable the current to the gold pins, when the smartwatch is not connected to the charging dock, while stressing that it’s “completely safe and unlikely to affect charging.”
The company apologised to all the customers for any kind of inconvenience caused by this problem and thanked the G Watch owners for their patience.
Earlier today Google has confirmed to the Android Police that the update, said to be rolled out automatically over-the-air to all the G Watch, has addressed the issue.
In an emailed statement to the Verge, LG spokesperson, confirming that the update shuts down the current, said that G Watch owners, who feel the wearable to be “damaged to the point of requiring replacement,” can consult the local LG service centre.
