Recent reports suggest Apple’s much anticipated smartwatch is not far from entering the commercial production stage, ahead of October launch this year.
According to a report from Reuters, citing sources familiar with the matter, Taiwan-based Quanta Computer has been tapped by the iPad maker for the production of its alleged upcoming iWatch and that mass production of the device will kick off as early as July to prepare for an October launch.
The smartwatch will likely feature a 2.5-inch rectangular display with a watch face slightly sticking out from the band to create an arch shape. The report also claims that the iWatch will ship with a sensor that tracks a user’s pulse, a touch interface and wireless charging capabilities.
Apple’s iWatch is rumoured to be capable of performing some functions independently, but certain tasks like messaging and voice chat will require connection to a smartphone. The device will only be compatible with gadgets running Apple’s iOS, like its flagship iPhone, one of the sources said.
The sources reported that Apple is expected to ship 50 million units within the first year of the product’s release. Quanta Computer, claimed to be the main manufacturer, will account for at least 70 percent of the components for the forthcoming iWatch, according to the sources.
A third source claimed LG Display Co Ltd to be an exclusive supplier of the iWatch’s screen for the initial batch of production.
However, Apple has not yet officially confirmed anything about the long-rumoured iWatch.
