Developers of the popular VLC have confirmed that they are working on an iOS variant of the app with support for Chromecast and on top of that VLC for other platform with casting support are also in pipeline.
When asked about support for Chromecast in VLC, lead OSX and iOS developer Felix Paul Kühne replied “We are working on it!”
Kühne also confirmed that VLC for other platforms with Chromecast support are also in pipeline. “In addition to the iOS variant, we are also working on a Windows / Linux / Mac implementation, which will take a bit longer because it’s harder.”
VLC is an open source and free media player that supports almost all video and audio formats out there and is probably one of the most used media players out there – thanks to its support for Windows, Linux, Mac, iOS among others.
The only other bit of information as far as implementation is concerned is that it will be in the form of a plugin. Other details are yet to be revealed and there is no definite timeframe for release either.
