A company going by the name New Matter has launched an Indiegogo campaign for its MOD-t 3D printer, which is being offered for just $149 under the “Early Bird Special” option.
The MOD-t 3D printer uses a process called the fused filament fabrication process for creating 3D objects of up to 6x4x5 inches. New Matter has opted for a two-axis motion system, which not only limits the way in which an object is build using up and down movement but also limits the price.
MOD-t’s industrial design has been created by well-known design firm Frog Design. New Matter intends to launch a designing software as well as a curated marketplace where designers can share their models made using the software.
One interesting bit about MOD-t is that is uses the same printing material used by other high-end printers like MakerBot Replicator Mini, the Da Vinci and the Pirate3D Buccaneer ($899). The material is organic plastic called PLA and it is one of the most common and easy-to-use printing materials.
Another thing that is noteworthy is the layer resolution of the MOD-t – as thin as 0.2 millimeters. This is not the best 3D printer resolution one can get out there, but it is definitely great considering that you can get it for as low as $149 where other vendors are charging over $1300 for 0.1 millimeter print resolution.
Those willing to buy the MOD-t after the ‘Early Bird Special’ will be required to shell out $199 and when it hits retail the 3D printer will be sold for $249.
