The Apache Software Foundation on Thursday announced its Apache OpenOffice suite has been downloaded a massive 100 million times within just 2 years.
The leading free and open Source office document productivity suite, Apache OpenOffice, is currently available in 32 languages on different operating platforms including Windows, OS X, and Linux.
“I’m extremely pleased to see us reach this major milestone in less than two years,” said Andrea Pescetti, Vice President of Apache OpenOffice, while announcing the achievement.
“This is a testament to our community volunteers: the hundreds of talented individuals who make Apache OpenOffice what it is, who write the code, test for bugs, translate the user interface, write documentation, answer user questions and manage our servers. We remain committed to offering the successful combination of reliability and innovation that so many users appreciate.”
OpenOffice, originally created as “StarOffice,” was trademarked to the Apache Incubator in 2011 and promoted as an Apache Top-level Project in October 2012.
Apache OpenOffice downloads via the official site openoffice.org is hosted by SourceForge, where users are also provided with over 750 extensions and 2,800 templates for OpenOffice.
The suite comprises of a word processor dubbed “Writer”, a spreadsheet dubbed “Calc”, a presentation editor dubbed “Impress”, a database management program dubbed “Base”, a vector graphics editor dubbed “Draw” and a mathematical formula editor dubbed “Math.”
The Open Source software is available to all users free of charge. Users can also get the C++ source code to enhance the applications.
A great office suite.
Wishing it hits the 200 million download mark soon!
