The Wikimedia foundation has launched an updated version of its official Wikipedia app which now offers a cleaner design, speeder navigation as well as article editing features.
Dan Garry, associate product manager of mobile apps for the Wikimedia Foundation, in a blog post said the revamped Wikipedia iOS app, released this week, has been totally rewritten in native code, focusing mainly on speed with mostly the same features along with some new ones.
Garry claimed that this new rebuild app will allow Wikipedia readers to search for content at a speed, faster than ever before.
The app now comes with a new clean, simple interface with a range of new features including the ability to edit Wikipedia articles, to select and save pages for offline reading, Wikipedia Zero support and a lot more.
An added contents sidebar now lets users navigate around articles quickly and easily. Content contributors can now edit Wikipedia articles directly from the app for the first time ever, even when they’re not logged in. The “recent” option allows users to easily access any recently viewed article by tapping the ‘W’ icon at the top left of the app.
The updated ad-free app also offers built-in support for seamless transitions between multiple languages.
Garry said the Wikimedia foundation has partnered with a number of mobile network operators across the world to provide the app free of cost to users in many developing and emerging countries through an initiative known as “Wikipedia Zero.”
The Wikipedia Mobile app is available now for download on the App Store for free.
