The number of accidents because of texting while driving is increasing globally and now Canadians also consider the activity of texting while behind the wheels as a socially unacceptable.
According to a recently carried out survey by Canadian Automobile Association (CAA), as many as 90 per cent of Canadians say texting while driving is socially unacceptable.
Texting while driving is a relatively new concern and many of the countries around the world have already dubbed it as illegal. Laws have already been established, but people around the world do not religiously follow these laws and creating awareness about the dangers of texting while driving is what remains to be done.
“We still need to close that gap between belief and behaviour,” says Jeff Walker, CAA vice president of public affairs in a press release. “But we are on the right track”.
The next step is to make texting and driving as socially unacceptable as drinking and driving,” Walker says. “CAA will continue to do our part along with other road safety advocates so Canadians actually stop doing it.”
The survey included responses from 1,252 Canadians wherein 22 per cent of Canadians admitted to reading or sending a text message while driving recently.
90 % agreeing that texting and driving is wrong still means there’s a lot of idiots still out there doing it
“socially unacceptable’ what nonsense, it is downright dangerous!
90% believe it’s wrong. And 40% still do it. Hypocrisy.
Distracted drivers are now killing and maiming more people than drunk drivers. It will take another 40 years to stop this, like it took 40 years to get drunk driving taken seriously. By that time, some other factor will be causing people to behave stupidly.
The root cause? A selfish disregard for the rules that protect us all.
In Ontario distractive driving is worth $1000 fine and 3 points. Get a few of these bad boys and you’ll be texting and walking.
Willing to bet that every self-righteous commenter here has done it at least once. How’s that for hypocrisy?
I’ll take that bet
Count me in
You mean how’s that for ignorance.
The problem is that “socially unacceptable” means nothing to most people; everyone has bad habits of some sort that fall into that category; Meaning: I could care less what everyone else thinks…
100% of people know that lying is unacceptable behavior but almost %100 of people do it in their daily lives…
