Google announced availability of its much awaited wireless video streaming dongle, Chromecast, in the UK that too with Netflix and BBC iPlayer support.
Chromecast’s UK launch was announced at an event held on Tuesday in London. The search engine giant announced its streaming device will support BBC iPlayer and Netflix, as well as some other “core” applications including YouTube, Google Play Movies and Google Play Music.
Chromecast can be plugged into any television with an HDMI port and can be controlled via a smartphone, tablet, or laptop enabling users to watch films or TV shows, listen to music or look at photos on the big screen.
Google’s director of product management, Mario Queiroz, said “Chromecast is the easiest way to bring your favorite online movies, shows, music and more to the TV screen. It should be easy for people to watch the content they want wherever they are, and we’re excited to bring the simplicity of Chromecast to international markets.”
Head of BBC iPlayer, Dan Taylor, at Chromecast’s launch said “I’m delighted that we’ve been able to add Chromecast support to BBC iPlayer, providing viewers with another convenient way of getting the BBC programmes they love to watch on demand on the biggest screen in the house.”
The streaming dongle, which was launched in the US last year in July, has also been made available in 10 other countries including Canada, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Italy, Netherlands, Norway, Spain, and Sweden.
The £30 Chromecast will be available at Amazon, the Google Play store and Currys & PC World.
