It seems Microsoft is planning yet another rebranding move by changing its Office Web Apps name to ‘Office Online’.
One of the pages on Microsoft’s website displayed ‘Office Online’ package, with a free version that offers 7GB of storage and cloud-delivered versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, as one of three Office 365 options alongside Office 365 Home Premium available for $9.99 per month and Office 365 University available for $79.99 for four years.
The ‘Learn More’ link under Office Online currently takes the user to the Office Web Apps page. Previously, that same space had the name Office Web Apps—and a “learn more” link connected to the existing Office Web Apps page.
Office Web Apps, which is the webified versions of Word, Excel, PowerPoint and OneNote, was launched by Microsoft in 2010.
ZDNet’s Mary Jo Foley, who posted the product matrix’s screenshot before Microsoft pulled the page, stated that “Up until now, Microsoft has touted Office Web Apps more as a feature of SkyDrive, its cloud-storage offering soon to be rebranded OneDrive, and/or as an Office 365 feature”.
From the chart listed on the tech giant’s webpage, it is clear that Microsoft is trying to make general public understand and know more about Office Online, Foley said.
Microsoft is renaming its SkyDrive cloud storage platform to OneDrive after deciding to settle a trademark dispute with British broadcasting firm BSkyB which owns the trademark ‘Sky’ in UK.
