Amazon has reportedly acquired Double Helix Games, developer of Killer Instinct, thereby adding fuel to the speculations that the online retailer is planning to launch a game console sometime later this year.
The news of the acquisition, first reported by TechCrunch came from an invitation to a joint recruiting event by the two companies.
Though financial terms of the acquisition deal are yet to be disclosed, all the 75 employees of the game studio are to remain at the studio’s Irvine, California headquarters.
The internet retailer, in an official statement, confirmed the deal: “Amazon has acquired Double Helix as part of our ongoing commitment to build innovative games for customers.”
Double Helix Games is known for its most recent game Killer Instinct for Microsoft’s Xbox One game console.
This acquisition is directly adding spark to the rumors that point to a possible Android-based console launch from Amazon with features such as streaming and downloadable games.
There were reports earlier that Amazon has already stared showing the sub-$300 console to potential game publishers and developers.
Amazon has not yet clarified its stand on the console rumors.
