Shuhei Yoshida, President of Worldwide Studios, Sony Computer Entertainment has revealed that Sony has managed to sell well over 1 million units of PlayStation 4 within the first 24 hours of going on sale in North America.
Announcing the feat over twitter, Yoshida said “PS4 has sold through over 1 million units within 24 hours of the launch in North America!!! :D”
Sony has described the sales as rather ‘phenomenal’ considering the response it received in less than a day. Sony’s target of achieving 3 million in sales for its PlayStation 4 doesn’t seem to be too far-fetched considering that the console is yet to go on sale in other major markets including the UK, some other European countries and Latin America.
Sony has a target of selling 5 million PlayStation 4 units the world by end of this financial year and it seems that impending Christmas holidays should do the trick. According to some estimates, sales in North America and Canada itself will reach a whopping 3 million by the end of this year.
PlayStation 4’s launch has been one of the smoothest for Sony till date when it comes to gaming consoles. PlayStation 3 suffered from huge supply constraints during the first few weeks of its launch and could only sell few units owing to these issues. There have been isolated incidents of PlayStation 4 consoles being DOA (dead on arrival) and PlayStation Network connectivity issues but all-in-all it has been a successful launch.
Sony’s announcement comes after reports flew in that Amazon sold out all of its Launch Edition consoles within 24 hours as well. As it stands, the PlayStation 4 Launch Edition is selling for a whopping $799.99 + shipping at one of the sellers on Amazon.
