Samsung Electronics has launched its first curved screen smartphone ‘Galaxy Round’ today featuring an unbreakable, curved 5.7-inch screen.
Galaxy Round’s announcement follows LG’s announcement that it was ready for mass production of curved screen displays and that it will also launch a curved screen smartphone sometime in November.
The new Galaxy Round will be lighter than the recently announced Galaxy Note 3 while also providing a comfortable and easy grip as compared to other flat-screen smartphones available in the market. Galaxy Round features Android 4.3 Jelly Bean, 4G connectivity, 2800 mAh battery and weighs 154 grams.
Key features of the new smartphone includes a tilt function which will allow to users to check missed calls, battery life and other information even when the home screen is not on. Users can change music tracks even when the display is off. Further users will also be able to scroll through their media files by pressing screen’s left or right.
Samsung Galaxy Round will only be available in South Korea initially with a price tag of 1.089 million won ($1,000) as it hasn’t decided which other markets it will be targeting. The Galaxy Round doesn’t pack anything extra apart from the curved screen and it seems that curved display alone might not be able to garner much traction; however, Samsung’s attempt is likely to be an appetite measuring bid to gauge consumer appetite for curved displays.
