The Free Software Foundation has come down heavily on Apple and its product lines. In what is considered as a harsh statement, the foundation is advising people not to patronise Apple’s products. In plain words, it said “Don’t buy their products.” meaning the newly launched iPhone 6, iPhone 6 Plus and Apple Watch.
The foundation, a non-profit organisation and advocates the use of free software and hardware, has also previously advised users to stay away from Windows products.
It has cited the way Apple uses the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) and said that the company has been using the law by threatening people with what they do to their product and bars the installation of third-party software.
John Sullivan, the executive director of the foundation also expressed anguish at the media for not highlighting the egregious things that Apple has been up to. He stressed on the way, the giant is prosecuting people for making changes to what they owned.
He further added that Apple’s use of a closed framework stifles any innovation that even came close to its own products.
Sullivan said that every review that does not mention Apple’s insistence on using Digital Restrictions Management (DRM) to lock down the devices and applications they sell is doing an extreme disservice to readers, and that is a blow to the development of the free digital society we actually need.
He continued that any review that discusses technical specs without first exposing the unethical framework that produced those products is helping usher people down a path that ends in complete digital disempowerment.
