While the sapphire crystal display has been one of the highlights of the iPhone 6 expected to debut at Apple’s September 9 event, new reports from analyst Ming-chi Kuo of KGI Securities say that it might not have a sapphire display after all, but a 128GB variant can be expected.
The research note published by Kuo yesterday notes that both models might lack the sapphire display due to drop test issues. As sapphire covers could shatter when dropped, Apple has not actually used it for the devices’ display, according to his report.
However, contradictory to the doubts expressed in previous rumours about the 128GB variant debuting later this year, Kuo’s report says that it would debut alongside the devices.
He also says that both devices will be unveiled on the same day along with iPad Air 2. iPhone 6 is also said to come with a built in barometer to enable use of indoor navigation applications and health management applications focused on spirometry.
He has also mentioned that as rumoured the power key might be moved to the side and in addition will be a programmable key. He says that it might be programmed to perform different tasks as set by the users, for instance, when the button is pressed long it could initiate an app or a function according to preset user preferences.
The report further notes that although the 5.5-inch model would debut this month, it will take at least another month to be generally available to the public as mass production of the device has not started yet.
Earlier this year, there were rumours about Foxconn, one of Apple’s suppliers, was facing employee issues due to which production is affected.
The report states that Apple’s wearable tech iWatch will not debut until 2015, while previous rumours suggest that it might debut alongside the iPhone 6 or later this year.
